Having recently acquired NBA greats Tommy Heinsohn, Bob Cousy and Bill Russell, the 1958 Boston Celtics were primed to embark on one of the most dominant runs in the history of sports. For 8 years the Celtics reigned supreme, winning every championships from 1959 to 1966. They won again in 1968 and 1969. At the end of 1969, Bill Russell retired and an era came to an end. During his 13-year tenure with the Celtics, he had won 11 championships the most of any player in NBA history.
Fast-forward to 1978. 9 years, and 4 championships later, the Celtics draft one of the most loved and respected players to ever play the game - Larry Bird. Bird made his debut in 1979, a year after being drafted. At the time, his $650,000 a year contract made him the highest-paid rookie in the history of the NBA. With the addition of Bird the team saw immediate changes, improving from 29-53 the previous season, to a league best 61-21 his rookie year. Despite tight competition from Magic Johnson, Bird was named Rookie of the Year.
In 1981, the Celtics faced off against the 76ers in one of the most remarkable Conference Finals Series of all time. The Celtics went down 3 games to 1, only to come back and win the last three games by two, two and one point margins. Now in his first NBA finals series, Bird led the Celtics to victory over the Houston Rockets in 6 games. Bird went on to win 3 consecutive MVPs starting in 1984, and 2 more NBA Championships. He retired from the NBA in 1992, and was inducted to the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1998.
In 2008 the Celtics defeated the Lakers 4 games to 2 in the NBA finals. This propelled the number of Celtics Championships to a record 17.
With such a rich history, it's easy to see why the Celtics Organization is one of the most (If not the most) well-respected franchises in the world of sports. They have a rich tradition of excellence rivaled by no other team in basketball, and die-hard fans that will stand by them through the good and the bad. Today, with players like Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett, and Rajon Rondo on the roster and a recent NBA title in hand, it is clear that the deepest tradition in the NBA is alive and well.
