The Spurs are one of the league's most successful franchises, with 4 championships in their history. Each of the championship victories occurred after 1999, and with the help of superstar Tim Duncan. They play in the massive AT&T Center , which is one of the newest arenas in the league (it was built in 2002).

The San Antonio Spurs came into existence in 1973 after short stints as the Dallas Chaparrals and the Texas Chaparrals. Three years after changing their name, the Spurs crossed over from the ABA to the NBA. Today they are one of the few remaining teams to have remained intact after the 1976 merger.

Among the most famous former Spurs players is 9-time NBA All-Star George "The Iceman" Gervin. During the 1977-78 season, Gervin and the Nuggets' David Thompson went back and forth competing for the scoring title. Ending the season with an exclamation mark, Thompson scored 73 points in his final game, which point Gervin at a 58 point deficit. He scored 63 points in the Spurs' final game to clinch the scoring title by 5 points, as well as secure a 52-30 record for the season. The Spurs went on to lose in the first round of the playoffs to the Washington Bullets.

Gervin guided the Spurs through 11 seasons, before being traded to the Chicago Bulls. In his absence, the Spurs drafted naval Academy standout David Robinson. When he began play in the 1989-1990 season, Robinson pulled the struggling Spurs out of the pits of despair, mounting the biggest one-season turnaround in NBA history.

The Spurs drafted Tim Duncan out of Wake Forest in 1997. The quirky Duncan had only been playing basketball since 9th grade. He was known for being a very stoic individual, and for doing odd things like wearing his practice shorts backwards, a habit he picked up while playing at Wake Forest. This player changed the Spurs franchise forever. 2 years later, the Spurs won their first championship ever. Duncan was named the Finals MVP. In 2003, he was named the regular season MVP and the Finals MVP as the Spurs defeated the Nets in 6 games for the championship. With the addition of Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili, the Spurs continue to dominate, and won titles in 2005 and 2007. Never count them out of the mix.
