Founded as an expansion team in 1970, the Cleveland Cavaliers is an organization that has eluded success for much of its existence. Aside from a short stint in the '80s where the Cavs made the playoffs 8 years out of 9, their history is riddled with struggles and disappointments.

After a troubling decade of consistent losing records and poor coaching, the Cavs finally caught a break in 2003 when they drafted LeBron James, a local high school player. This was a turning point in the franchise's history. James won Rookie of the Year in the 03-04 season. In the following years, he increased his productivity in nearly every category. In only his 4th season, James led the Cavs to the NBA finals, where an incredibly dominant San Antonio Spurs team made quick work of the Cavaliers, sweeping them 4-0.

In 2008 LeBron won Defensive Player of the year and NBA MVP, leading the Cavs to an astonishing 66-16 record, the best in the league. The Cavaliers entered the playoffs as the #1 seed, but were eliminated in the Eastern Conference Finals by the Orlando Magic. In the following season, LeBron won his second MVP award, and led the Cavs to another league-best record of 61-21. In the second round of the playoffs, the Cavaliers suffered a shocking upset to the Boston Celtics in 6 games.

The following year, Cleveland was the center of one of the most heavily-publicized controversies in sports history. LeBron James announced his departure from Cleveland to play with Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh. The city of Cleveland was outraged, calling LeBron's move a "Cowardly betrayal."

While LeBron continued to shine in Miami, his absence was felt immediately in Cleveland. The Cavs 19-63 record was 2nd-worst in the league. Their struggles continue, but with the addition of Kyrie Irving and a 2012 1st round draft pick, the Cavaliers are moving in the right direction.
