Founded in 1995 as an expansion team, the Toronto Raptors are the only Canadian team in the NBA. After dealing with the usual expansion team struggles, the Raptors acquired Vince Carter in 1998. He went on to win Rookie of the Year in 1999. With Carter at the helm, the Raptors made the playoffs in 2000, 2001 and 2002. Although Carter's dominance turned the franchise around, the Raptors struggled to advance past the semifinals and in 2002, Carter was traded to the New Jersey Nets.
In 2003 the Raptors drafted Chris Bosh. Bosh became the face of the Raptors. Not until the 2006-2007 season did the playoffs return to the playoffs. They faced their former star Vince Carter and the New Jersey Nets, who defeated them in 6 games. In 2007 the division champion Raptors returned to the playoffs, only to fall victim to Dwight Howard and the Orlando Magic in a 5 game series.
After several solid years with the Raptors, Bosh signed with the Miami Heat with LeBron James and Dwyane Wade in 2010. This sent the team into a tailspin, but it should be brief. As Canada's only NBA team, the Raptors have fans that are among the most loyal in the league.
