The Kings have had three names and have represented 5 different cities since their inception in 1945. The franchise has been home to such greats as Oscar Robertson, Nate Archibald, Mitch Richmond and Chris Webber. The Kings play in the oddly-named Sleep Train Arena
Originally the Rochester Royals, the Sacramento Kings joined the NBA in 1948. The Royals seemed to perform will on the court, but the organization ran into financial trouble in Rochester, which proved incapable of sustaining an NBA team. As a result, the franchise moved to Cincinnati, which proved to be more sustainable. However, in 1972, the team moved again to Kansas City, Missouri, changing their names to the Kings. Finally, in 1985 the Kings moved to Sacramento where they have stayed ever since.
In 1996, the Kings drafted Peja Stojakovic, one of the NBA's all-time best shooters. In addition, a year later, the Kings drafted Jason Williams, signed Vlade Divac and traded for Chris Webber. The team was strong, and regularly appeared in the playoffs. Often criticized for their defense, the Kings thrived on the offensive side of the ball. This may have been the reason why they were usually defeated in the playoffs.
In 2000, the Kings traded with the Toronto Raptors for shooting guard Doug Christie, who helped the team win their first playoff series in 20 years. In the following series, the team was swept by the Los Angeles Lakers, who again took advantage of the Kings' weak defense, and went on to win the championship.
After adding Mike Bibby in 2001, the Kings finished with a 61-21 record. In the 2002 playoffs, the Kings were eliminated by the Lakers once again. Today the Sacramento Kings are led by DeMarcus Cousins and Tyreke Evans, and young up-and-comer Jimmer Fredette looks to make a splash in Sacramento.
